"Love had to count for something. Maybe he could learn to control it,
to turn it off, whatever “it” was. Maybe the horns would go away. They had come
without warning, why shouldn’t they go the same way?”
Ig Parrish is a tormented soul. His girlfriend, Merrin, was raped and murdered a year ago and Ig was suspect #1. Although he was never prosecuted, Ig lives in solitude drinking his days away. One morning, after a night of endless drinking, Ig wakes up to discover actual horns on top of his head. These horns give Ig some very devilish new skills. Whenever Ig encounters someone, they compulsively tell him their deepest, darkest and sometimes sinister secrets. If Ig touches the person, he can also see all the terrible things they’ve done. Ig learns that everyone in town, including his mother and priest, believe he raped and killed his girlfriend. Through flashbacks and several townspeople interactions, we learn the identity and the reasoning behind Merrin’s rape and murder. With his new powers, Ig prepares to deliver his own brand of justice.
Horns was a horrifically delightful read. From the first page, I was engrossed with Ig who is such a tortured character. It made sense that after being deserted by all he knows, Ig would turn to something darker to help bring justice for Merrin. The main theme of Horns is easily identified as the devil being more of an anti-hero rather than a villain. Even though he did some horrible things, I still couldn’t help rooting for Ig.
Joe Hill’s writing skills are a force to be reckoned with. The characters are all strong albeit very disturbed. There is not a person who is immune from wanting to commit evil deeds, to which I found amusing. More than once, Joe Hill left me cringing with a few sentences, and I’m no stranger to the horror genre. There are a lot of disturbing images portrayed so if you are not accustomed to that sort of thing, this may not be the book for you. While I grimaced, I couldn’t help turning the page. Joe Hill unraveled a terribly sad story, layer by layer, and waited for me to be fully invested before delivering an action packed ending. Horns is currently being adapted as a film and I can’t wait for its release.
